About Your Instructor

Ted O'Brien is a Medical Qigong Therapist, Acupuncturist and Director of the Maryland branch of the International Institute of Medical Qigong.  He has worked professionally with patients for over twelve years. He is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (B.S. Human Nutrition, 1993), the Maryland Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine (Master’s, Acupuncture, 1999) in Bethesda, Maryland and also has a Master’s Degree in Medical Qigong Therapy after intensive training with Dr. Jerry Alan Johnson, one of the few internationally recognized non-Chinese Masters of Medical Qigong Therapy.

Ted has worked with several prominent Doctors of Chinese Medicine over the years and has performed thousands of patient treatments. Gaining insight and skill from years of practice and continually studying the art of Chinese Medicine, Ted has learned to successfully treat a wide range of maladies ranging from: musculoskeletal diseases (such as back pain, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, etc), psychological disorders (such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, mania), chronic diseases (such as irritable bowel disorder, chronic fatigue syndrome and fybromyalgia) and other disorders such as migraines, allergies, cold/flu, cancer (side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatment) and digestive ailments.

In addition to his private practice in Bethesda, Maryland, Ted currently acts as a consultant at the George Washington University (GWU) Center for Integrative Medicine in Washington, DC.  In this capacity he teaches classes at GWU to Medical students about Chinese Medicine and also provides treatments to patients at the Center for Integrative Medicine.

Ted first discovered acupuncture in his early twenties after enduring various back and knee problems that threatened his recreational basketball career.  As a last resort, acupuncture was the only therapy that proved especially effective.  Fascinated with the results, Ted decided to pursue an education in the field of Chinese Medicine.  Today, Ted leads a simple yet disciplined lifestyle owing much of his time to the pursuit of mastering the art of Chinese Medicine and learning how to best help others in his private practice.

Ted has performed dozens of public lectures and taught classes on Acupuncture and Medical Qigong throughout the Metro area over the years and also writes a monthly column in the Gettysburg Times newspaper on Holistic Health and Healing.
